Specialty Clinical Services

Full integration of specialty services in the previous University Medical Unit (UMU) and Government Medical Unit (GMU) was completed in 1994/95. Integration of medical staff duties was started in September 1995 and large part of this was completed at the end of 1995/96.

The high standard of service in each of the specialties have been maintained in all existing and new activities. Each division offers a range of specialist services. The Department provides specialty clinical services in 12 Divisions situated in 5 locations. Many of these services represent ground-breaking efforts in Hong Kong. The Department has pioneered care in many innovative areas including:

  • invasive cardiac procedures such as coronary angioplasty and radiofrequency catheter ablation, innovative cardiac pacing;
  • the first prenatal diagnosis and genetic counselling centre for thalassaemia, haemophilia and neurodegenerative diseases in SE Asia and the only one in Hong Kong to date;
  • Hong Kong's first bone marrow and peripheral stem cell transplants;
  • physician support for Hong Kong's first liver, heart and lung transplants;
  • protocol chemotherapy for leukaemia, lymphoma and advanced lung cancer;
  • the first endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography service, the first endoscopic sphincterotomy service for bile duct stones as well as the first biliary stenting service for malignant jaundice.

Other milestones include:

  • the programme for refractory epilepsy with EEG telemetry and comprehensive pre-surgical evaluation & the Acute Stroke Unit;
  • comprehensive cardiac, pulmonary, and renal rehabilitation programmes;
  • the development of dedicated well-woman and diabetic clinics in community practice and the establishment of the Centre of Education and Research in Family Medicine,
  • the KK Leung Diabetes Centre, and
  • the Simon KY Lee Digestive Disease Laboratory, which is the first laboratory in Asia using the 13C Mass Spectrometer to detect Helicobacter pylori infection of the stomach.
